Grace's room in the new house used to
be a little boy's room - it had a nice color, but also a prominent a
boat-themed border, and boat-curtains to go with it. Her mother and I
liked the wall color, but wanted to make Grace a room that represented
what SHE likes - bees, butterflies, "McDuff" the adventurous
dog, and at the same time cover up the boat border (or the dark blue that
was under it). We decided to paint McDuff images in the clouds so that
Grace can see him but he is not intrusive, considering the possibility of
an easy change once she outgrows him. She is even added to the
story!
A real-life dog is
painted in the bathroom, watching over her while she plays, and I designed
curtains to match the rest of the room. What I like about this room is
that it is very light and airy. It gave a solution to the border-issue,
will be a good design for Grace when she gets older, and it can be altered
easily to add any new favorite characters.
