Commissioning A Mural

If you've never commissioned someone before to do artwork, you might have questions about how the whole process works. While every project is different, my working methods are similar throughout.

Preliminary Call & Meeting

Pricing Questions

Most people that call me feel very nervous about commissioning a mural. One of the first things they want to know is "How much does it cost?"

Due to the unique nature of each mural, there is no set price list. Pricing depends on the design, the size of the room and the mural wanted, the traveling distance and the time, and the availability of the homeowner. What I usually tell people is that prices can range anywhere from $200 for a single character to $1500 (or more) for a whole room. I am capable of working with different budgets, and I can provide better ideas of what I can do within a budget when I see the room and hear some of your ideas.

Scheduling a Meeting

The best way for me to understand your ideas and for you to feel more comfortable with the idea of painting a mural is to schedule a meeting. Try to find a good time when you can spend at least half an hour without distractions, so we can really make the most of it.

There is no fee nor further obligation to you for the first meeting. You might, however, get some ideas or suggestions on how to do something you weren't sure about. Some people I have spoken to were worried they weren't going to go through with the project, and didn't want to waste my time. Don't worry - my meetings with you are always valuable whether or not you decide a mural is the right way to go.

During the meeting

I'll bring my portfolio, and we'll discuss ideas for your room, whether you have a budget in mind, your time frame, and any other questions you might have. I might do some small doodling while we're talking to demonstrate an idea or two, and if you decide you want to start a mural, we go for the next step!

Sketches & References

At the end of the first meeting, we start planning your mural. I charge a $50 fee for sketches. This fee is to be paid upfront and includes the following:

1. A search for reference images.

2. Sketches of different ideas and characters we discussed as they would be positioned in the room.

3. A final full-color drawing of the design we choose. This enables you to see the "final" version of the design in whole, and also to see the colors that will be painted, and make any wanted changes. Some color adjustments will be made when on the wall because of the texture and color of the existing paint.

4. Meetings fees until we start the mural, as long as we keep working towards refining a specific idea.  I will charge an additional $50 if you want to design a completely different theme after we've had a couple of "sketching meetings".

The sketching stage can range from days to weeks. We're trying to make sure you are getting a design that suits you and your child best.

Proposal and Contract

After we've agreed on a design, I will create a proposal estimating the time length and cost of the project. We will then sign a contract based on my estimate, which I honor regardless of additional time/materials costs. There are no "hidden costs" in my contracts. I ask for half of the total price up-front to pay for materials.

Painting

We schedule a convenient time to paint. Completion time varies, depending on the project and the working conditions. I am very respectful of your space,  make sure all my work area is covered when I'm there, and that it is clean when I'm done!
